Goal 5: Work

Outcome 5c

In Metadata, our final project was a group project that included creating a collection for an institution and assigning the proper metadata to the items. I worked with two classmates, and together we were able to negotiate job functions and execute tasks on time. Usually, when I hear “group assignment,” I get a bit anxious; however, this experience was pleasant, and everyone was open to sharing ideas and critical feedback. It wasn’t just about agreeing with one another to avoid conflict either. It was a creative, inclusive experience that resulted in a stellar passing grade.

Outcome 5d

I was fortunate to complete a paid library internship with Elmwood Park Public Library to assist the library director in a unique project. The library partnered with the You Are Beautiful art campaign to have a piece of commissioned community art placed on the outside of the building. The director wanted to solicit ideas from the community schools to gather feedback on what types of inspirational words should be used in the art piece to inspire the community.

I traveled around to each of the elementary schools in Elmwood Park and ran sessions with nearly every grade. In these sessions, I introduced the concept of community art, explained the initiative, got feedback on what the artwork for the library should say, and facilitated an art project.

Click here to see the mock up what the project will possibly look like thanks to student’s feedback. The art installation is scheduled to be completed in April of 2020. (This PDF will be removed after this assignment is graded and replaced with actual signage photo when the project is complete.)

Outcome 5e

I did not get the opportunity to lead a group during my graduate study time. However, I did write a research paper on servant leadership for my Leadership, Marketing, and Communication course. I chose the concept of servant leadership to study as I was familiar with it from previous professional experience. This focused study so enriched me! I learned so much more than I had known. I also got the opportunity to interview the director of the Elmwood Park Public Library, whom I was referred to by another leader. Tiffany Verizani was very gracious and a perfect example of servant leadership. In fact, I was so impressed by her leadership skills that I applied to work for EPPL for an internship. Later, I applied as an employee and currently work for EPPL. Understanding and recognizing proper leadership is the best foundation for future practice. Because of this study and my experience, I already know that a servant leader is the kind of leader I wish to emulate.
